All work permits candidates should be fully aware of the conditions implied in a work permit.

A work permit restricts the rights of the employee to the following:
a) the employee can only work for one specific employer and
b) employment is limited to a time frame of two years maximum.

From our point of view, a work permit often works more in favour of the employer who may take advantage of the fact that the employee's work permit in Canada is restricted to this particular employer. If the employee wants to change employment the candidate first has to find a new employer and apply for a new work permit which allows him/her to work for this new employer. This whole application process may take 8-12 weeks in which the employee cannot work.

We therefore ask our clients to carefully evaluate whether a temporary work permit is really what you want.

When you i.e. plan to immigrate to Canada on a long term anyway, we strongly recommend to start with the immigration application right away and wait until your application has been approved. When you then come to Canada as an immigrant with permanent resident status the same employment regulations apply to you as to any Canadian citizen. You have the same rights and obligations as a Canadian employee and you are not at the mercy of the employer.

If then something goes wrong with your employment you may change the employer without any restrictions.
